Mukwonago's five wells: how the village water came to be a blend

Mukwonago's water supply was put together in stages over more than five decades. Knowing what each stage added explains why the village blends its water, and why the blend still reads very hard.

1966 and 1981: two wells to 1,500 feet

The village's two deep wells were drilled in 1966 and 1981, fifteen years apart, and each reaches 1,500 feet. Both are still part of the five-well system the utility runs today, and they supply the deep side of the blend.

2001 and 2014: three shallow wells

The shallow wells came later, in 2001 and 2014. They draw from 105 to 180 feet down, a small fraction of the deep wells' reach.

Water from different depths carries different chemistry, and the utility blends the shallow water with the deep on purpose. What the DNR sampled at the two entry points in June 2026 is that mixture.

2019: an iron filtration plant at Well 5

In 2019 the village built an iron filtration plant at Well 5, where the water ran high in iron. On the village system, that filtration happens before the water reaches any home.

For a home on the mains, that plant is the utility's job, not the homeowner's. Its purpose was iron, not hardness: the DNR's June 2026 samples, taken years after it was built, still put village water at 390 and 370 milligrams per liter.

What five decades of wells add up to at your faucet

A blend of five wells at very different depths is still very hard water: about 22 to 23 grains at the two entry points, more than twice the USGS very hard line of 10.5.

It also explains why it pays to read your own faucet. Different depths, different chemistry, one blend: the plumber's test on install day shows what that blend delivers to your kitchen, and the retest at the end has to show zero.

Outside the village, none of this applies

A private well in the Town of Mukwonago or Vernon has its own depth and its own water, with no blending and no plant ahead of it. What it carries is whatever its lab report says, and that report is where a quote for it starts. The third guide here covers testing one.

Common questions

When were Mukwonago's wells drilled?

The two deep wells in 1966 and 1981, and the three shallow wells in 2001 and 2014.

Did the 2019 iron plant change the hardness?

It was built for iron at Well 5, not for hardness. DNR samples taken in June 2026, years after it was built, still read about 22 and 23 grains.

Are the deep wells still in use?

Yes. The utility still runs both 1,500-foot wells alongside the three shallow ones, and it blends water from the two depths.
